TORONTO (AP) - The San Jose Sharks look nothing like the low-scoring team that lost 10 straight before acquiring Joe Thornton this week.
Thornton had two assists for the second straight night with his new team, helping the Sharks rally to a 5-4 victory Saturday over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Alyn McCauley scored twice for the Sharks, who ended a 10-game losing streak Friday with a 5-0 win at Buffalo - Thornton's debut with San Jose after being traded by Boston on Wednesday.
"With Joe, maybe there is a lot more confidence that we're going to get more than two goals," McCauley said.
Mark Smith, Scott Hannon, Patrick Marleau had the other goals for the Sharks, who have scored 10 in two games. They entered tied for the fifth fewest goals in the league.
"I think it took the trade to wake up guys," McCauley said. "If we don't shape up and do the things that we are capable of doing, new faces are going to be in and the old faces are going to be somewhere else."
Thornton, born in nearby London, Ontario, said he was nervous.
"We had a slow start in the first but the boys played great in the second and third. It's another good two points for us," Thornton said.
Darcy Tucker, Eric Lindros, Matt Stajan and Jason Allison scored for the Maple Leafs, who have lost two of three.
Toronto captain Mats Sundin assisted on Tucker's goal, giving him 769 points with Toronto - surpassing Borje Salming for second on the team's career list.
Maple Leafs goalie Ed Belfour could have become the NHL's second winningest netminder with a victory but he allowed four goals on 27 shots. Belfour is tied with Terry Sawchuk at 447 wins.
"For some reason we gave them too many easy goals that were tough for Eddie to stop," Tucker said. "It's disappointing to play well in the first period and lose."
Hannon scored the first goal with a shot from the side of the net at 4:06 of the opening period, but Toronto followed with three straight.
The Sharks took the lead in the second with three consecutive goals of their own on just eight shots against Belfour.
Marleau put his own rebound in at 5:34 of the second, McCauley scored on one-timer in front of the net and Smith gave San Jose the lead for good with a short-handed goal by skating in alone and putting a slap shot past Belfour's blocker, giving San Jose a 4-3 lead at 11:46 of the second period.
McCauley, a former Leafs player, gave San Jose insurance with a backhanded goal from in front at 14:15 of the third.
Allison scored on a wraparound with 2:39 left, but the officials didn't immediately rule it a goal. After a long delay they agreed to review the play. The video replay showed the puck crossed the line before goalie Vesa Toskala got his stick on it.
Scott Thornton, Joe's cousin, then received a delay-of-game penalty for clearing the puck into the stands.
The Maple Leafs called a timeout, emptied their net and put out an extra attacker but Joe Thornton cleared the puck from San Jose's end, ensuring the victory.
Notes: San Jose goalie Evgeni Nabokov didn't play after straining a groin Friday. Toskala made 24 saves in his place. ... Lindros has 11 goals in 28 games with the Maple Leafs, his hometown team. ... The Leafs had won six of seven home games. ... Joe Thornton has just eight penalty minutes this season.
