DALLAS (AP) - Marco Sturm rescued San Jose from the brink of another defeat, then Patrick Marleau ended the Sharks' four-game losing streak with a burst in overtime.

Marleau's breakaway goal 3:20 into overtime lifted San Jose to a 5-4 victory over the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night.

"We're finally getting some breaks," Marleau said. "The games in the past, we've been all over teams early, then we've given up a goal and it deflates the bench. But to battle back is a great confidence booster."

Dallas took a 4-3 lead into the final minute of regulation but Sturm's power-play rebound with 19.9 seconds remaining tied it. Brenden Morrow drew a high-sticking penalty with 38 seconds left to give the Sharks a power play, and San Jose pulled goaltender Nolan Schaefer to make it a 6-on-4 skating advantage.

"Everybody on the ice did something to get that tying goal," Marleau said.

The Stars thought they'd scored the winner 20 seconds into the five-minute overtime on Morrow's rebound, but the goal was disallowed because it came after referee Kelly Sutherland's whistle.

"It was a judgment call by Kelly," Morrow said. "He felt that someone pushed (Schaefer) into the net before the puck went across the line, and it couldn't be reviewed."

Sturm set up the winning goal, taking possession off a turnover from Dallas defenseman Philippe Boucher. Sturm's pass to center ice ended up on the stick of Marleau, who took the bouncing puck and went into the Dallas zone alone.

Marleau scored his fifth goal of the season when he beat goaltender Marty Turco between the pads.

"I had a bad feeling watching (Marleau) with that much room," Morrow said.

Marcel Goc, Scott Hannan and Jonathan Cheechoo also had goals for the Sharks.

Schaefer made 12 saves in his NHL debut, coming on in the second period in relief of starter Vesa Toskala, who sustained a groin injury.

Rookie Jussi Jokinen scored two second-period goals for Dallas.

Jere Lehtinen added a goal and two assists for Dallas in the first meeting of the season between the Pacific Division rivals.

Trevor Daley also scored for Dallas. Turco made 36 saves, 18 in the third period. He had been 7-0-1 against San Jose.

"There's no excuse to give away games like that, especially division games," Stars coach Dave Tippett said.

Goc notched his first NHL goal on a deflection at 6:27 of the opening period. Hannan added his first of the season 36 seconds later to give San Jose a quick 2-0 advantage.

Lehtinen made it 2-1 at 15:09 of the first period with his sixth goal of the season.

Goc was awarded a penalty shot at 17:22 when Turco threw his stick at the puck on a breakaway. Goc failed to convert on the attempt when he fired high on the backhand.

Dallas took a 3-2 lead in the second period when Daley scored his first of the season and second of his career at 6:40. Jokinen added his third of the season 32 seconds later to make it 4-2.

"The test was, could we handle the adversity in the second period and we did," Sharks coach Ron Wilson said.

Toskala, who hurt his groin earlier in the period, exited after the first Jokinen goal. Jokinen got his fourth of the season at 9:39 of the second period, knocking a rebound past Schaefer.

Cheechoo countered at 10:24 to narrow Dallas' edge to 4-3.

Notes: Sharks No. 1 goalie Evgeni Nabokov is still out because of a shoulder injury. ... Stars D Sergei Zubov was back in the lineup after missing two games due to back spasms. ... San Jose had scored five goals in its previous four games. ... Turco has stopped four of the five career penalty shots he's faced.
