SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- The San Jose Sharks haven't been scoring much lately. Then again, they haven't needed much offense to earn points in the standings.
Jonathan Cheechoo scored with 5:54 remaining and the Sharks stretched their home unbeaten streak to nine games with a 2-1 victory over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks on Monday night.
Marco Sturm, playing in his 500th NHL game, also scored for the Sharks, who have two goals in each of their last nine games.
"Our main goal is not to score the most goals in the league but to make it to the playoffs," Cheechoo said. "Scoring two goals every time out is not a concern because we have been getting points most of the time."
The Sharks are 4-3-2 over their last nine games and are within two points of Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles with a home-and-home series looming against the Kings on Friday and Saturday.
Stanislav Chistov, a healthy scratch the previous two games, scored for the Mighty Ducks. Anaheim lost its fifth straight on the road and is winless in 12 consecutive road games.
"We're not giving up many goals but we're not scoring any either," Anaheim coach Mike Babcock said. "It's not like we don't get our opportunities. The reality is that neither team could get any shots in the first two periods. They got the big goal at the end."
San Jose beat the Mighty Ducks in Anaheim on Sunday night, 2-1. The teams faced each other for the fourth time in 13 days and the fifth time this season. They don't play again until March 19 in Anaheim.
"The games get a little feistier, and it creates more of a rivalry," Cheechoo said. "After four games you really get to know each other."
The Mighty Ducks, who took a season-low two shots on goal in the first period, got on the scoreboard first early in the second period during a power play. Jason Krug had the puck along the lower left boards and passed to Andy McDonald in the lower left circle.
McDonald skated the puck to the left of the net, and when Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov challenged him, McDonald slipped a pass into the crease. Chistov then wristed the puck straight up into the net with 17:31 left in the period.
"We're not a very good team right now," Ducks forward Steve Rucchin said. "We're in a funk, and we're having a hard time getting out of it, and it's affecting a lot of guys in the locker room."
Nabokov finished with 24 saves, the same amount he had against the Mighty Ducks on Sunday night.
With 3:56 left in the second period, Sturm, parked just right of the net, redirected a slap shot from Kyle McLaren which was headed for the right side of the net. Alyn McCauley took control of the puck behind the net and wristed a pass to McLaren just inside the blue line.
"For a young team there's a lot of character in this room," McCauley said. "We've shown a lot of resiliency on our club from the start. We just kept plugging."
Since a 1-5-4 start, the Sharks have gone 11-4-6.
Patrick Marleau set up Cheechoo's goal when he skated past a pair of defenders and fed Cheechoo just outside the crease on the left side. Cheechoo flipped the puck past Anaheim goaltender Martin Gerber's left shoulder.
