Dallas Stars 3, San Jose Sharks 0 FINAL

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Though Bill Guerin and Marty Turco were the stars of the Dallas Stars' latest victory, they shared the game puck with 18 teammates.

Guerin scored two goals, including the 300th of his career, and Turco stopped 17 shots for his third shutout of the season in the Stars' 3-0 victory over San Jose on Tuesday night.

Scott Young also scored in his fourth straight game for the Stars, who dominated their second meeting of the season with the team that has replaced them atop the Pacific Division. In recognition of perhaps the Stars' most complete team effort of the season, coach Dave Tippett awarded the game puck to everybody.

"We all put a lot of importance on this game," said Young, who had just two goals in his first 36 games before his current scoring spree. "We knew we had to play desperate. It's the start of a road trip, and it's against a division leader. ... In January, it doesn't get much bigger than that."

Desperation seems to suit the Stars, who began a five-game road trip with little margin for error after starting the season with three disappointing months. The win vaulted Dallas into a second-place tie with Phoenix in the division standings: Both teams have 46 points, while the Sharks lead with 51.

"Desperation is a good word," Guerin said. "If we go down nine (points with a loss), that's a lot of points to make up. ... I thought we played pretty good in all aspects. We were skating, we were moving our feet and making plays, and that's what gets it done for us."

The Sharks lost at home in regulation for the first time since Nov. 11. San Jose had earned a point in 14 consecutive home games before being soundly beaten by the Stars.

"They beat us in just about every area you can think of," Sharks coach Ron Wilson said. "You have to credit them. They came out hard, and we never seemed to get anything going. ... They've got a pretty good lineup, and I'm sure if you asked them, they would probably say that it was the best game they have played in a long, long time."

Guerin became the 14th American-born player to reach 300 goals when he raced past two defenders and ripped a shot past Evgeni Nabokov midway through the second period. The Worcester, Mass., native got his 301st -- his 20th of the season -- midway through the third, following Brenden Morrow's breakaway chance with a rebound goal.

Guerin, a starter in next month's All-Star game, had his biggest game since captain Mike Modano was knocked out of the lineup with a groin injury 10 days ago. Modano, also selected as an All-Star starter along with Turco, has missed five games.

Playing in his 18th straight game for the Stars, Turco rarely was out of position in his 15th career shutout and second in three games. He has been beaten just once in his last 11 starts: a 4-2 loss to Colorado last Saturday.

"We played close to our capabilities tonight, that's how we're going to look at it," Turco said. "We did well, and now we need to do it consistently."

Dallas played a superb defensive game in front of Turco, limiting the Sharks to 12 shots -- five by center Patrick Marleau -- over the first 45 minutes. The Stars easily extended their winning streak when leading after two periods to 54 games.

"They plugged the middle up pretty good," Sharks defenseman Mike Rathje said. "They were coming out of their end pretty easily. There wasn't a lot of pressure. They weren't making any mistakes. It seemed like a dull game. We weren't generating any excitement on offense."

Young intercepted Brad Stuart's clearing attempt late in the first period and scored his sixth goal of the season. Young always plays well against the Sharks: He has 24 career goals in 44 games against San Jose.

Nabokov made 20 saves, but lost for the third time in four starts.
