Sharks Beach CleanupThe San Jose Sharks, in conjunction with marine conservation non-profit Save Our Shores, host beach cleanups throughout the year at Cowell Beach in Santa Cruz. Cowell Beach, nestled next to the wharf and just a few yards down from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, is a popular spot among beachgoers and surfers. This popularity, however, often leads to an overload of litter and the need to clean it up on a regular basis.
The partnership between the San Jose Sharks and Save Our Shores was made possible through the organization's Adopt-A-Beach program. As a result, the Sharks have helped popular Cowell Beach maintain its beauty for future visitors by collecting the debris left behind by beach goers for the past three years.
Over the three cleanups the Sharks hosted in the 2012 summer, volunteers picked up over 140 pounds of trash and over 40 pounds of recyclables. Included in that total were over 5,000 cigarette butts, 1100 pieces of plastic, 700 pieces of paper and several used syringes.
