The Sharks Foundation partnered with Kaiser Permanente in 2015-16 for the second year of the Stick to Fitness powered by Kaiser Permanente Street Hockey Program. Stick to Fitness is a fun and active program dedicated to educating sixth grade students on the importance of healthy living, while encouraging them to be active during physical education classes and at home.
This year the program taught lessons in health and fitness to more than 2,500 underserved youth and provided 10 local schools with street hockey equipment at no cost. The program kicked-off with a visit at each of the 10 participating middle schools, from either Sharks defenseman Brenden Dillon or alumni Jamie Baker and an official Kaiser Permanente team doctor.
Kaiser Permanente physicians taught their 5-2-1-0 campaign (five fruits and veggies, two or less hours of screen time, one hour of exercise and zero sugar sweetened beverages per day) and did a hands-on demonstration with students about sugar consumption in sugary beverages. Dillon and Baker then answered hockey and healthy living-related questions and handed out prizes, while getting students excited about playing street hockey in school.
After the kick-off assembly, each school began a five-week street hockey and nutrition curriculum with the equipment that was donated by Kaiser Permanente and the Sharks. Upon completion of the program, students were rewarded for their hard work in learning street hockey with a visit from S.J. Sharkie. Each child also received two passes each to go ice skating at Sharks Ice in San Jose for free.
Since its inception in 2014-15, Stick to Fitness has impacted more than 4,300 students’ lives at 20 different middle schools in the Bay Area.
