Sharks Pediatric Clinic at Valley Health Center Tully
Going to the doctor isn’t something that kids usually like to do, but maybe that’ll change after their first visit to the “Sharks Pediatric Clinic” at Valley Health Center Tully. During the 2011-12 season, the Sharks Foundation—in partnership with the VMC Foundation—completed their biggest project in more than a decade, redesigning an existing pediatric clinic into a Sharks-themed environment.
The clinic—located in an underserved area of San Jose—sees over 6,000 patients each month, and provides children and their families with full access to a pediatrician for regular check-ups, immunizations, urgent care and emergency dental care regardless of ability to pay.
The newly designed “Sharks Pediatric Center” will create a comfortable care environment that is fun and exciting for kids. A new play area in the waiting room and Sharks-themed exam rooms will provide a more positive physical environment for young patients receiving treatment.
According to Valley Medical Center (VMC) staff, “it is becoming increasingly important for hospitals and clinics to surround patients with sights and sounds that help put them at ease. This is especially important for children. If kids are excited to see their doctor, they’ll have a more productive visit.”
In addition to the redesign, “Healthy Living” posters featuring mascot S.J. Sharkie were created to promote wellness, healthy eating and physical activity to young patients during a time when obesity rates are rising at alarming rates.
“We have educational materials in each exam room that encourages parents and children to eat better, exercise and stay healthy,” Valley Health Center Manager Carolyn Scaglione said.
“These new images and decor reinforce the message from health care providers in a fun and engaging way. The Sharks Foundation provided us with an amazing renovation that will be here for many years to come and for many more children to enjoy.”
“We want this clinic to be a symbol of the Sharks commitment to the community,” Sharks Foundation Manager Jeff Cafuir said. “We hope to send the message that the health of our kids is one of our top priorities.”
