2014-15 Season Recap

This season, the Reading Is Cool presented by Comerica Bank program has brought the joy of reading to over 39,000 students in Santa Clara County and Southern Alameda County!

Throughout the school year, teachers distributed certificates, bookmarks, monthly medals and other incentives to help motivate students to reach their reading goals. Since the 2014-15 season started, S.J. Sharkie has visited over 150 classrooms to reward participating students for their exceptional progress in reading and, as a special treat, brought each classrooms a bag full of books for their school or classroom libraries.

These books came directly from our Sharks fans who contributed to our game-day book drives at the beginning of the season here at SAP Center, as well as twice during the year at our local Comerica Bank banking centers. Earlier this year, Sharks Goaltender, #31 Alex Stalock and, most recently, Sharks alum #81 Tyler Kennedy, alongside S.J. Sharkie, hosted book drives at Comerica Bank’s Los Gatos and Willow Glen banking centers where over 600 books and close to $300 was donated to benefit the Reading Is Cool presented by Comerica Bank program.

The Sharks Foundation, the teachers, and, most importantly, the students would like to thank Comerica Bank for sponsoring this wonderful program for many years and a special thank you to all of the Sharks fans who regularly contribute to the Sharks Foundation’s various book drives to provide students with materials for their classrooms.

How does it work?

Reading Is Cool Presented by Comerica Bank is a free and unique literacy program focused on public K-6 grade classrooms in Santa Clara County and southern Alameda County (Fremont, Newark and Union City), although private schools and schools outside of our geographic area are eligible for some elements. It promotes the importance of reading while sharing the excitement and enjoyment of a good book. Through a multifaceted approach that includes exclusive experiences and incentives, students are encouraged to succeed as individual readers and as a classroom team.

This program is designed for individual classrooms and runs from October through April, parallel to the San Jose Sharks regular season. The best feature of the Reading Is Cool Presented by Comerica Bank program is that it is easy to integrate and teachers make it fit their class' needs! Every teacher who registers will be provided:
  • A set of All-Star Reader medals
  • MVP Reader medal
  • Bookmarks for every student
  • Certificates of Participation for every student
  • Tracking Poster for students to record monthly totals
  • All-Star Reader Poster to acknowledge outstanding readers
  • Promotional poster for the classroom
  • A "thank you" gift for each participating teacher

Students track the number of pages they read each month on printable Student Reading Logs or an electronic Student Reading Log downloaded from the Reading Is Cool Presented by Comerica Bank website. Teachers then report their class' total pages read each month online for consideration for class "team" prizes. For the individual awards, teachers select the student each month they feel is most deserving based on number of pages, minutes or books read, most improved or greatest effort. That's it!

Along the way there are other elements to Reading Is Cool Presented by Comerica Bank that you can read about in the links above. They include visits from mascot S.J. Sharkie, Celebrity Story Hours, All-Star Reader Night and more!
