Blacktop Resurfacing Projects
The San Jose Sharks, Sharks Foundation and the Good Tidings Foundation have enjoyed a long standing partnership of transforming old blacktops at local elementary schools into custom street hockey courts. As a result of this relationship, eight street hockey courts have been constructed in recent years, giving students the opportunity to learn the game of hockey in a safe environment while being physically active. The past three courts have been sponsored by a Sharks player (Patrick Marleau – 2008, Joe Pavelski – 2010, and Joe Thornton – 2012) who each made a generous donation to help funding. In addition to the resurfacing, the Sharks Foundation donates sticks, jerseys, goals, and goalie gear to each school, ensuring that the children have everything they need to play hockey.
Most recently, Sharks Captain Joe Thornton dedicated a street hockey court at Mildred Goss Elementary School in San Jose. This court has been incorporated into the school's physical education program as well as their structured recess time. The new blacktop surface and street hockey equipment has already made a positive impact on the school and its surrounding community.
