Highlights: C Bernie Nichol played in his 1,000th NHL game at St. Louis October 20.
The 47th NHL All-Star was played at San Jose Arena on January 18, 1997. The Sharks were represented by RW Owen Nolan and LW Tony Granato. Granato was chosen as the commissioner’s special selection for the Western Conference and Nolan scored a hat trick.
Granato became the first player in franchise history to win a major postseason NHL award by receiving the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
The Sharks acquired G Ed Belfour from Chicago in exchange for G Chris Terreri, RW Ulf Dahlen and D Michal Sykora Jan. 27, 1997.
