Sharks in the Community

The Sharks recognize the value in helping the community and for that reason, we are extremely proud of the work we do. Whether it’s with the Sharks Foundation—the team’s official charity—or through fan development initiatives, the Sharks are committed to making a positive impact in our community.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
Sharks and Parks
Indoor and Outdoor Street Hockey Programs

In 1991, the Sharks created Sharks & Parks, a street hockey program that provided schools, community centers and youth organizations with street hockey equipment and coaching tools and instruction to select centers in order to generate an interest in hockey and make it more accessible to local youth.

The program was so successful in San Jose, that the NHL hired its creator to implement the program at a league level. Currently the program is in 33 NHL and AHL cities.

Mobile Shark Tank
The Interactive Street Hockey Experience!

The Mobile Shark Tank, consisting of one-foot-high light foam boards, is a portable and interactive mobile street hockey experience geared toward elementary school-aged children. A safe, non-competitive experience, this hockey rink allows children to play street hockey in a designated area like a parking lot, blacktop or gymnasium floor free of charge. All you need to participate are tennis shoes. The Sharks will provide sticks, balls and necessary equipment for goalies.

High School Writer's Day
Experience a Day in the Life of a Professional Sports Journalist

The San Jose Sharks High School Writer’s Day features seven high school students who are selected for the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a professional sports journalist.

This past year was the eighth anniversary of the event, which featured the writers coming to a Sharks vs. Colorado Avalanche game, meeting local sports journalists and Sharks Executives, a tour of HP Pavilion, player interviews, and a post-game write up from each student.

PlayStation Future Sharks
Play on Sharks Home Ice During Intermission!

For over 10 years, youth hockey players from Northern California (10 and under) have graced the ice and have had the rare opportunity to skate on the same surface as NHL players through the PlayStation Future Sharks program. The Future Sharks program gives Norcal youth hockey clubs the chance to showcase their talent at home games throughout the Sharks season.

BAASST
The Bay Area All-Star Scholarship Team

In a collective effort to support youth working towards the goal of higher education, Bay Area professional sports franchises have teamed up to form the Bay Area All-Star Scholarship Team (BAASST).  Each participating Bay Area sports team does its part in contributing to the BAASST program each year. With this initiative, the Bay Area sports franchises identify seven outstanding students and award each of them a scholarship for $3,000.

Green Territory
Green is Our Goal! Help the Sharks Go Green

The San Jose Sharks "Green Territory" program is an effort to do our part in the community to help the environment, implement reducing, reusing and recycling practices in our day-to-day operations. We encourage our fans to do the same.

Beach Cleanup
Participate in the Sharks Beach Cleanup Project

The San Jose Sharks, in conjunction with Save Our Shores, host beach cleanups throughout the year at Cowell Beach in Santa Cruz. Cowell Beach, nestled next to the wharf and just a few yards down from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, is a popular spot among beachgoers and surfers. This popularity, however, often leads to an overload of litter and the need to clean it up on a regular basis.

Join the San Jose Sharks in keeping our beaches clean and do your part in helping the environment.

Blood Drive
Join the "Save a Life" Blood Drive at HP Pavilion

Each year, the Sharks Foundation and the Stanford Blood Center team up for the "Save a Life" Blood Drive at HP Pavilion at San Jose. Hundreds of Sharks fans turn out to participate in this donation opportunity, consistently making it Stanford Blood Center's most successful drive of the year.

Participants who register to donate blood or sign up for the Blood Marrow Registry are invited to watch the San Jose Sharks morning skate following their donation appointment.

Sharks Foundation

The San Jose Sharks are as deeply involved with the neighborhood we live in as we are with the game that we play. As role models, we feel responsible to give back to the community that so strongly supports us.

To this end, the Sharks Foundation was created in 1994 in an effort to increase our organizational impact on Santa Clara County. With the help of Sharks players, coaches and staff, the Sharks Foundation invests in the community with the hope of enhancing the lives of our youth. It quickly evolved and expanded beyond its original charter and has since donated more than $6 million to more than 120 non-profit groups in Santa Clara County. During the past two seasons, the Sharks Foundation has been able to provide close to $1 million in support to local organizations.
