The Sharks Foundation Beneficiaries 2003-04

A Place for Teens is a teen center open to middle and high school aged youth in Santa Clara County free of charge. The OUTHOUSE provides a safe, supervised, positive alternative for teens to gather, study, use computers, play games, wait for rides after school, hear speakers and attend workshops on teen issues and attend targeted events and activities. The facility, which the teens helped design and fund is co-managed by teens, under adult supervision. The Outhouse offers interactive programming to preemptively direct youth away from behavior that puts them at physical or emotional risk.

Assistance League of San Jose's mission is to provide school uniforms for underprivileged children in San Jose Unified School District. The Sharks Foundation funding will assist in providing three polo shirts and two pairs of long pants for 700 children. According to principals of several participating schools, self-esteem of students has risen and there has been decreased number of class disruptions. Most importantly attendance continues to improve. "When students are experiencing success, the more they want to be in school."

Bill Wilson Center's mission is to support and strengthen the community by serving youth and families through counseling, housing, education and advocacy. Each year the agency serves over 6000 clients through 10 programs. The Sharks Foundation funding will support the School Outreach Counseling Program.

Center for Training & Careers/21st Century Project is a community based, non-profit public benefit that provides vocational training and job placement assistance. Recognizing the need to serve youth that have dropped out or have been suspended from high school, the 21st Century Program was developed. This program provides vital services to out of school youth who need and deserve educational and intervention programs. The ultimate goal of this program is to assist in providing a successful transition into a productive, healthy and gang-free lifestyle for out-of-school and gang- affiliated youth.

CHP 11-99 Foundation's mission is to serve CHP officers families in time of financial crisis due to an officers death in the line of duty. This also includes education scholarships for the spouse and the children to further their education. The Sharks Foundation funding will assist with emergency services exclusively in the Bay Area.

Cinequest Film Festival is an eleven-day festival celebrating the art of cinema through a diverse showcase of international maverick cinema- films that convey a personal and adventurous vision. The Sharks Foundation funding will support YouthQuest. YouthQuest is a unique three-part program that is part of Cinequest's Community Outreach Initiative. Activities include, free passes to screenings for 1500 Eastside Latino Families, Interactive film education for grade schoolers and arts education/mentoring program.

City Year San Jose is a national service organization which unites young people ages 17-24 from diverse social, cultural and economic backgrounds for a demanding year of full-time community service, leadership and civic engagement. City Year primarily serves elementary and middle school children both in schools and through after-school programs. The Sharks Foundation will co-sponsor a City Year Team and will work together to enhance our communities and the lives of the children in our communities

Downtown College Preparatory's is the first charter high school in Silicon Valley designed to prepare urban minority students to thrive at four-year universities. They serve 300 students grades 9-12 in downtown San Jose. The Sharks Foundation funding with assist with the Focus on Literacy Program. This program has three primary components: Disciplinary Apprenticeship, Sustained Silent Reading and Verbal Reasoning. The purpose of this program is to increase literacy and improve reading and writing proficiency among DCP students.

Environmental Volunteers mission is to promote understanding of and responsibility for, the environment through hands on science education. The Sharks Foundation funding will assist with 218 Kids in Nature Field Trips. This program take 5000 K-8 school children on guided nature hikes and offers them hands on outdoor natural science education at various open space preserves on the peninsula and in the South Bay.

Family & Children's Services is a private non profit human service agency serving individuals, couples and families throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. The agency offers a wide variety of comprehensive, affordable counseling, education, intervention and prevention programs and has collaborations with local schools, community based organizations, county providers and corporations. The Sharks Foundation funding will be used to fund critical prevention counseling programs and Early Childhood Services. Services include child behavioral and psychiatric assessment, counseling for children and their families, prevention training for staff, parenting education and information/referral service.

Greater San Jose After-School All-Stars mission is to provide opportunities for inner-city youth to participate in sports, educational, cultural and community enrichment programs; to build self esteem; to encourage youth to say "no" to gangs, drugs and violence and "yes" to hope, learning and life. The Sharks Foundation funding will support all sports and education programs.

Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen is a community-based non-profit organization which provides nutritious, hot meals, food baskets, information and referrals to hungry families with children, senior citizens, couples and women in Santa Clara County. The Sharks Foundation funding will support the Children's Meal Program. This program was developed to meet the health and nutrition needs of low-income families with children in the downtown and San Jose areas.

Montalvo Art Education and Outreach Programs will institute a new division dedicated to teacher services. The Sharks Foundation funding will support all Montalvo Art Education and Outreach programs, specifically Montalvo Master Class Series. Newsletter for Educators and a Visual And Performing Arts Educators Day. These programs and services will support the educators existing classroom programs and lessons plans.

National Conference for Community & Justice is a human relations organization that combats bias and bigotry, and promotes understanding and respect among all races and religions and cultures. NCCJ's work is prevention-oriented, helping to reduce tensions & violence in our diverse regional community. The Sharks Foundation funding will support Camp Anytown. Camp Anytown is an intensive youth leadership development programs that teaches respect and responsibility. This 4 day residential retreat for high school students breaks down stereotypes, bias and prejudice. It increase understanding and respect for differences in race, ethnicity, religion, culture and other factors that act to divide us.

Pacific Autism Center for Education mission is to provide high quality programs for individuals with autism/developmental disabilities, so they may experience the satisfaction and fulfillment that accompany learning, self-expression, self-care, productive work and interpersonal and community experiences. The Sharks Foundation funding will support the Vocational Training Program.

Resource Area For Teacher (RAFT) mission is to infuse pre K-12 students with the joy of learning through interactive activities in science, math, technology and art, by encouraging and supporting their teachers, supplying them with an abundance of low-cost hand-on materials-ideas for their creative use in the classroom. The Sharks Foundation funding will support all education programs.

San Jose Conservation Corps provides specialized education and vocational training opportunities to San Jose's most difficult to serve or disadvantaged young men and women. The Sharks Foundation funding will support the YouthCorps Program. This program has helped hundreds of 9th-12th graders stay in school and out of trouble by providing a safe, on-site, after-school activities designed to boost academic performance, build self-esteem and encourage teamwork.

San Jose Museum of Art is dedicated to fostering the awareness, appreciation and understanding of twentieth and twenty-first century art in the diverse audiences of the Bay Area, through cutting edge exhibitions, nationally applauded Studio Arts Programs, collections, award-winning publications and high caliber arts events. The Sharks Foundation funding will support the Multi-Part Art Program. This program is designed to give low-income students an in-depth, hands-on art experience. An artist works with students in a classroom setting every week. Approximately, 780 students will receive 26 eight week Multi-Part Art Residencies.

San Jose Repertory Theatre developed the Red Ladder Theatre Company as its' social outreach branch in 1992. Red Ladder is dedicated to serving individuals outside of the scope of mainstream services with a special commitment to children and teens. Red Ladder works with at-risk populations, incarcerated youth and adults, pregnant and parenting teens, homeless high school students, developmentally disabled youth drug recovery participants, and youth service leaders to improve their lives and our community through arts education and participation. The Shark Foundation funding will support Red Ladder program goals in K-12 public education, youth leadership training, significant community partnerships and teaching self-reliance skills.

School Health Center's mission is to keep children healthy and in school by providing easily accessible health care to children and adolescents on school campuses. Clinics have been strategically located at 11 sites in five school districts with substantial medically under-insured, low-income student population. The Sharks Foundation support will provide vital primary health care and prevention services for medically underserved children at Washington Neighborhood Health Center. The goal of these services is to improve attendance and academic performance, reduce suffering due to untreated conditions, and prevent costly visits to hospitals and emergency rooms.

Services for Brain Injury is a community based organization that helps with traumatic or acquired brain injuries achieve the highest level of independent functioning of which they are capable and supports their caregivers. The Sharks Foundation funding will assist these programs and also fund the fourth phase of the educational campaign with After School Children's Program.

Silicon Valley Children's Fund mission is to develop and support special programs, projects an services for abused and neglected children at the Children's Shelter and in the community. The Sharks Foundation funding will support the Kids First Program. This program serves as a catalyst for developing children's services and helping vulnerable kids heal, become productive members of the community and achieve their dreams for the future.

Silicon Valley Habitat for Humanity, along with the community, helps low income families build and own their own homes. Since 1990 they have built 25 homes for families with 100 children. Their vision is to eliminate substandard living conditions in Santa Clara County. The Sharks Foundation funding will support the construction of two housing units in San Jose.

Special Olympic's mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with developmental disabilities by giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics and the community. The Sharks Foundation funding will assist with the development of six floor hockey programs in a school based atmosphere within Santa Clara County, exhibitions and training clinics for both coach and athletes will be an important tool in reaching out to the potential families, athletes and volunteers.

The Support Network for Battered Women mission is to empower battered women, their children and their families to live their lives free of violence by integrating a multicultural perspective to effectively serve our diverse communities. The Sharks Foundation funding will support the STAR(Students Talking About Relationships) Program. This program is a youth initiative that develops leadership potential in local youth as they effectively work toward social change by addressing the realties of domestic violence and dating violence in their communities.

Triton Museum of Art exists to embrace and expand the lives of the people in Santa Clara County and the Greater Bay Area through a program of art, education and community involvement. The Sharks Foundation funding will support The Triton Museum of Art's ArtReach Hospital Program at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. This program provides critically ill and chronically hospitalized children with an opportunity to help deal with their pain by expressing themselves creatively.

Volunteer Center is a non-profit organization that offers a variety of services and programs aimed at achieving our mission "to connect volunteers with community needs and promote volunteerism." The Sharks Foundation funding will support the Youth Volunteer Leadership and Service Team.
