Sharks Re-Sign Defenseman Scott Hannan

SAN JOSE, CA - San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has re-signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Scott Hannan to a one-year contract.

"Scott is a high-character, veteran player who leads by example," said Wilson. "He understands and accepts his role based on the needs of our team and will be a great mentor for many of the younger players on our roster."

Last season, Hannan played in 56 games for the Sharks, posting 12 points (three goals, nine assists), 55 penalty minutes, a plus-one rating, and 1:52 of shorthanded ice time per game (fourth on the team). Hannan played in all seven postseason games with the Sharks, registering two assists and a plus-one rating.

The 35 year-old Hannan has appeared in 997 career NHL games with San Jose, Colorado, Washington, Calgary, and Nashville, notching 210 points (36 goals, 174 assists), a plus-two rating and 599 penalty minutes. In 100 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, he has added 21 points (one goal, 20 assists), a +15 rating and 93 penalty minutes.

Hannan spent the first eight years of his career in San Jose, playing in 508 games. Following 2013-14, Hannan has played in 568 regular season and 76 postseason games with the Sharks, which ranks tied for fifth and fifth in the organization's history, respectively.

The six-foot-one, 215-pound native of Richmond, British Columbia, was originally selected by San Jose in the first round (23rd overall) in the 1997 draft.

"I'm going to come into the year and coming here with the anticipation of playing and we'll see where it goes from there," said Hannan via conference call. "I'm willing to help out any way I can to move this team forward and get to that ultimate goal and I think we have a great shot at winning this year for everything and every reason."
