Julius Bergman Facts

Originally scheduled to pick 51st overall in the second round, the Sharks dealt their 51st pick and a 2015 fourth-rounder to the Nashville Predators in exchange for the 46th overall draft pick.

With the 46th pick, the Sharks selected Swedish-born defenseman Julius Bergman, who is expected to play in Sweden’s top professional league, the Elitserien, next season.

Here are some other important things to know about Bergman.

  1. Is a large, but not overly physical blueliner who excels at playing a simple style of defense. This includes a preference to make low-risk plays, where he makes quality breakout passes and relies on strong stick work to break up opposing offenses. Fits the mold of fellow Swede Jonathan Ericsson of the Detroit Red Wings, and Henrik Tallinder of the Buffalo Sabres.

  2. His selection at 46th overall came just after two fellow Swedish-born defensemen were taken in an eight-pick span: Anaheim selected Marcus Petersson 38th overall and Ottawa took Andreas Englund 40th overall. Together, Bergman, Petersson and Englund are expected to anchor Sweden’s defense corps at the World Junior Championships in Toronto and Montreal next December.

  3. Is slated to play next season for the Frolunda Indians of the Swedish Elite League, after having played for Frolunda’s junior team most of last season. Current NHL players who are Frolunda graduates include Henrik Lundqvist, Daniel Alfredsson and Johnny Oduya.

  4. Bergman’s Frolunda team is based in Gothenberg, Sweden – the country’s second-largest city, behind Stockholm – and its name origin is that Frolunda is a neighborhood of Gothenberg. It is similar to the Dodgers having once been called the Brooklyn Dodgers, despite having played in New York City.

  5. Was born on November 2, 1995, which is the same week that “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls” was premiered in movie theatres.
