LOOKING BACK: (past nominations)
Game 1 vs. Kings – PAVELSKI
Pavelski got things rolling in Game 1 for the Sharks as he had the primary assist on the first goal of the series scored by Joe Thornton. Pavs finished with an assist, +1, 2nd on the club with six hits, and won 62% of his faceoffs in 19:34 of ice time in the Sharks 6-3 victory over the Kings in Game 1.
SHARKS GAME 2 SPARK – BURNS
- 5th on the Sharks this regular season in points (48), 4th in goals (22), 2nd in shots (245), and 2nd in +/- (+26).
- 2nd on the Sharks with 18 goals, 3rd with 33 points in 38 games this season at the SAP Center.
- Led all Sharks players with a +23 rating on home ice this season
- Set a career high for goals (22) and points (48) and reached the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his career.
- Had 13 points (4-9-13) in his last 13 regular season games and was 2nd on the team with 145 hits this season.
- Recorded a goal, assist, was +2, tied for team lead with five shots, and 2nd on club with six hits in 16:26 of ice time in the Game 1 win over the Kings.
Burnzie had a breakout year offensively for the Sharks this season and had a strong Game 1 performance vs. the LA Kings on Thursday… look for that trend to continue in Game 2 on Sunday.
The Sharks nominee this season for the King Clancy Memporial Trophy for his leadership and making a noteworthy humanitarian contribution to the Sharks community, Brent has been heavily involved with the Defending the Blueline organization and raised $60,000 by shaving his head and beard for charity this season. Look for #88 to continue to give back to the San Jose community with a BIG Game 2 performance vs. the Kings on Sunday.
Sharks head coach Todd McLellan:
"We've been through enough successes and failures to know you have to put each game behind you and be ready to go. They're (Kings) a veteran group. They'll park it. They'll come back and play, and we'll probably get the game that we thought we would get originally when the series started from this point on. We better be ready."
Worcester Sharks associate coach David Cunniff:
This series will be a battle of attrition – it will beat people up. Burns is so big and physical. He has a long stick and reach and gets in heavy on the forecheck and can be so dangerous. You watch, a fore-check will lead to a big turnover in this series.”
GAME 2 PREDICTION (gut feeling)
Burns had twice as many points at home this season (33pts at home, 15pts on road) and already racked up two points in Game 1. With a lot of the focus surrounding the return and success of Tomas Hertl and Raffi Torres – as well as the Mike Brown hit in front of the LA net early in the first period in Game 1 – I’m looking for Brent Burns and the Sharks top line to lead the way on home ice in Game 2. Look for #88 to use his 6-foot-5 frame on the fore-check and cause a momentum changing turnover to SPARK the Sharks to a 2-1 Game 2 victory over the Kings. A 2-0 series lead heading into Game 3 in LA sounds good... does it not Sharks fans!?
