Thornton Earns PlayStation \'Three Stars\' Award

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks (@sanjosesharks) announced today that forward Joe Thornton is the winner of the 2013-14 PlayStation® “Three Stars of the Game” award. Thornton will be honored with an award from PlayStation in an on-ice presentation following tonight’s game against the Colorado Avalanche at SAP Center at San Jose. On behalf of the winner, Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC (SCEA) will present a check for $2,500 to the Sharks Foundation and Thornton will receive a PlayStation®4 (PS4™) system with a VIP pack of games.

“We are proud to be a sponsor of the San Jose Sharks,” said Guy Longworth, SVP, PlayStation Brand Marketing at SCEA. “The entire Sharks organization works extremely hard to be one of the best teams in the NHL and PlayStation loves to reward team members for their successful efforts. It’s a pleasure to honor this impressive player in all of his outstanding achievements.”

Thornton has posted 74 points (11-63=74) and a plus-18 rating in 80 games this season. He currently ranks second in the NHL in assists (63), 13th in points (74), and 11th in faceoff percentage (56.1%).

It is the ninth time in his career that Thornton has registered 50 or more assists in a season. Throughout his career, he has finished the season ranked first in the NHL in assists three times, top-five in assists six times, and top-10 in assists eight times. With two games to play in the 2013-14 season, Thornton currently ranks second in the NHL with 63 assists, four behind the NHL leader, Sidney Crosby.

This season, Thornton was named the Brocade “Sharks Player of the Month” for November, leading the Sharks to an 8-2-3 record with 16 points and 13 assists in 13 games during the month.

The Sharks team captain is currently 25th on the NHL’s all-time assist list (850) and 46th on the NHL’s all-time points list (1,184 points). Since his trade to San Jose on Nov. 30, 2005, the Sharks have posted a 405-109-79 record (65.6% points percentage), the most points and wins in the NHL during that time. In addition, Thornton stands as the NHL’s third-leading scorer during that span, posting 738 points (173 goals, 565 assists). He ranks first on the Sharks all-time assists list and second in points.

The PlayStation “Sharks Three Stars of the Game” Award winner is tabulated by the number of times a player is named a “star of the game. At the end of each regular season game, players received five points for being chosen first star, three points for second star and one point for third star as listed on the official NHL game sheet. Each star is chosen by members of the media based on the player’s performance each game.
