Fans Invited to Participate in Playoff Beard-a-thon
The Sharks Beard-a-thon\u00AE is an opportunity for fans to grow their own playoff beard , or pledge their favorite beards, and raise money for charity.

SAN JOSE - It's playoff time. The passion. The emotion. And, yes, the beards. This playoff season, San Jose Sharks fans are invited to participate in the San Jose Sharks (@sanjosesharks) playoff run by growing their own playoff beard. The San Jose Sharks Beard-a-thon® is an opportunity for fans to grow their own playoff beard , or pledge their favorite beards, and raise money for charity. Proceeds from the 2014 San Jose Sharks Beard-a-thon will benefit the Sharks Foundation (@sharkscare).

Participants in the San Jose Sharks Beard-a-thon will invite family, friends, and business associates to pledge their playoff beards. By joining the San Jose Sharks Beard-a-thon, fans pledge to maintain their beard as long as the Sharks remain in the playoffs. Fans who are unwilling, or unable, to grow playoffs beards, can also pledge a beard grower. For more information, or to enroll in the San Jose Sharks Beard-a-thon, please log onto www.beardathon.com/sharks.

Since the Beard-a-thon launched in 2009, hockey fans across the country have raised over $2.5 million for hockey related charities. All donations to the San Jose Sharks Beard-a-thon are tax deductible.

The Sharks Foundation will direct funds raised through this year’s campaign to two organizations: the Breast Cancer Angels and the American Cancer Society.

The Breast Cancer Angels, based in Southern California, offers financial and emotional support services to women and their families as they go through breast cancer treatment. Mary Nieto, mother of Sharks rookie forward Matt Nieto, was a recent client of Breast Cancer Angels when she was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer this October. To honor her continuing courageous battle, a portion of proceeds from this year’s Beard-A-Thon will be donated to Breast Cancer Angels in Mary’s name. For more information about Breast Cancer Angels please visit: www.breastcancerangels.org.

The American Cancer Society, which provides a variety of resources and services for several types of cancer including breast cancer, will be the campaign’s second beneficiary. Proceeds will specifically benefit the local chapter of the American Cancer Society located in Campbell, CA. For more information, please visit: www.cancer.org.

About the Playoff Beard
A playoff beard is the superstitious practice of a National Hockey League player not shaving his beard during the Stanley Cup playoffs. The player stops shaving when his team enters the playoffs and does not shave until his team is eliminated or wins the Stanley Cup. It is believed that the tradition was started in the 1980s by the New York Islanders. In recent years, other sports and other players have claimed the playoff beard tradition, but it is a hockey, and always will be, a hockey tradition.
