Players Visit Oakland Ice Center on September 9

SAN JOSE, California - On Monday, Sept. 9, at 4 p.m., select players from the San Jose Sharks organization will visit the Oakland Ice Center Operated By Sharks Ice (OIC) to greet local fans. The players will take time out of their busy training camp schedule to skate with the public and offer up pointers to the youngest members of the OIC's youth hockey program.

Members of the Cal Ice Skating Team will be on hand to assist the players with a skating clinic for prospective hockey players. Participants will include registrants in the OIC Pre-Hockey Classes, residents of the Fox Courts Apartments across the street from the rink, and children from the Lincoln Square Recreation Center (Oakland Park & Rec) in Oakland's Chinatown.

Afterward, the players will conduct a hockey skills clinic with the Oakland Bears Mite (8U) and Squirt (10U) youth hockey teams, followed by an autograph session before hitting the road back to San Jose.

"Interacting with these young professionals as they are going through their own tryout process is so inspiring for all of our young athletes," said Melissa Fitzgerald, OIC General Manager. "The kids appreciate the time the players are devoting to them and become excited to follow them as they advance through their NHL careers."

Sharks Ice is currently accepting registrations for its fall hockey classes and house hockey league, both of which begin the week of September 17. Sharks Ice offers classes and leagues for children and adults of all ages and skill levels in a variety of ice sports, including ice hockey, figure skating, curling, speedskating and broomball.

In addition to its paid programming, Sharks Ice provides thousands of young Oakland residents each year with the opportunity to participate in ice sports at little or no cost through physical education classes, after school programs, high school hockey, and a variety of other activities. Most recently, the OIC has partnered with neighboring Oakland School for the Arts to offer the first Figure Skating Emphasis in a public school curriculum. Sharks Ice is a proud member of the NHL's "Hockey Is For Everyone" initiative.
