Two Sharks Prospects Make USA Camp Cuts

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Tuesday began with 12 players being sent home from the National Junior Evaluation Camp as USA Hockey trimmed its camp roster from 43 to 31 players.

"As a staff, we have been happy with the players' intensity and compete level," Jim Johannson, USA Hockey's assistant executive director of hockey operations and the general manager of the 2014 United States national junior team. "The players released today will continue to be evaluated this fall for Team USA. For the players that are staying, the games this week give us an opportunity to continue assessing them."

Of the 31 players remaining, there are 18 forwards, 10 defensemen and three goalies. The only goalie released was Collin Olson, a Carolina Hurricanes prospect. In two games for USA White, Olson allowed three goals on 32 shots, but stopped all 15 shots he faced Monday in a 5-2 win against Finland.

Remaining in net are goalies Jon Gillies, Anthony Stolarz and Thatcher Demko.

Among the six defensemen trimmed from the roster was Anthony DeAngelo, a top prospect for the 2014 NHL Draft. Last season with the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League, DeAngelo was third among OHL blueliners with 58 points in 62 games. Also sent home were Gage Ausmus (San Jose Sharks), Dylan Blujus (Tampa Bay Lightning), Nick Ebert (Los Angeles Kings), Keaton Thompson (Anaheim Ducks) and Thomas Vannelli (St. Louis Blues).

The five forwards sent home were Justin Bailey (Buffalo Sabres), John Hayden (Chicago Blackhawks), Vincent Hinostroza (Chicago Blackhawks), Matthew Lane (2014 draft eligible), and Brady Vail (Montreal Canadiens).

Also officially cut was Winnipeg Jets draft pick James Lodge, who sustained an upper-body injury Saturday, the first day of practice.

The trimmed-down roster will have its first practice later Tuesday morning, and will play its first game Wednesday against Sweden.
