Sharks Sign Couture to a Five-Year Extension
SAN JOSE, California – San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed center Logan Couture (@Logancouture) to a five-year contract extension. The extension will commence on July 1, 2014 following the expiration of Couture’s current contract.
In 2012-13, Couture played in all 48 regular season games for San Jose, leading the team in goals (21) and finishing second in points (37) and assists (21), along with a +7 rating and four penalty minutes. Amongst all NHL players, Couture ranked sixth in game-winning goals (5), 10th in goals (21), and 15th in power play goals (7). Amongst forwards, Couture’s 51 blocked shots ranked second in the NHL.
Couture also played in all 11 postseason games for the Sharks, registering a point-per-game average with 11 points (five goals, six assists). Amongst Sharks players, Couture ranked T-first in goals (5), first in power play goals (5), first in game-winning goals (3) and second in points (11). In Game Three of the Sharks WCQF against Vancouver, Couture tallied four points (two goals, two assists), including a pair of power play goals and an assist in the third period. That performance set a Sharks postseason franchise record for most power play goals in a period and tied franchise records for most points in a game, most points in a period and most goals in a period.
In addition, Couture accrued various awards during the season. He finished 5th in Lady Byng voting, was named the NHL’s Third Star of the Week from April 15 –21 and was named the Brocade “Sharks Player of the Month” for the month of April.
His 84 regular season goals over the last three seasons ranks him seventh among all NHL players.
During the 2011-12 season, Couture was voted the 2011-12 Brocade “Sharks Player of the Year”, selected to the 2012 NHL All-Star team and was named Brocade “Sharks Player of the Month” in December. He tied for first on the team in goals (31) and was second in points (65). His 76 blocked shots were T-8th amongst league forwards.
In 2010-11, Couture was the runner-up for the Calder Trophy, presented to the NHL’s top rookie, after registering 56 points (32 goals, 24 assists) and a +18 rating. He was also named the 2010-11 PlayStation® “Sharks Rookie of the Year” and in December 2010 was named NHL Rookie of the Month as well as Sharks Player of the Month.
The 24 year-old Couture has appeared in 232 career NHL games with San Jose, notching 167 points (89 goals, 78 assists), a +31 rating and 67 penalty minutes.
In 49 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, he has posted 33 points (17 goals, 16 assists) and 6 penalty minutes.
The six-foot-one, 200-pound native of London, Ontario was originally selected by San Jose in the first round (9th overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft.
