Sharks Sign 2012 First Round Pick Tomas Hertl
Hertl, 19, spent last season with HC Slavia Praha, where he led the team in goals and points (18 goals, 12 assists for 30 points) in 43 games. In 11 postseason games, Hertl also added eight points (three goals, five assists).
“Tomas has the tools and skill set to be an impactful player for our organization,” said Wilson. “He has been a dominant player at every level he has played at in his career thus far, including playing against players older and more physically mature than him. We are tremendously excited to have Tomas come to training camp this fall and compete for a spot on our roster.”
Hertl was selected to represent the Czech Republic at the 2012 World Junior Championship last Dec., where he was an assistant captain and tied for the team lead in points (5), T-3rd in goals (3) in 6 games. He was also voted among the top three players on the Czech team for the tournament.
He represented the Czech Republic for the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships earlier this month.
Hertl previously played the Czech Republic at the 2012 World Junior Championship. There, he finished tied for first on the team in points (3-2=5) to go along with a +2 rating. Hertl was selected as one of the Czech Republic’s top players in the tournament by a panel of coaches.
In 2011-12, his first season with Slavia in the Czech Elite League, he was named Rookie of the Year, posting 25 points (12 goals, 13 assists) in 38 games.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound native of Praha, Czech Republic was selected by the Sharks in the first round (17th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft.
