Annual Fundraiser Showcases Sharks "Favorite Things"
How much would you pay to get a behind-the-scenes look into the life of your favorite Sharks athlete? This month, hockey fans proved that they would be willing to empty their pockets for the opportunity, helping the Sharks Foundation raise nearly $30,000 through the annual “Favorite Things” Basket Auction.
Hosted by the Lady Sharks, these unique baskets are stuffed with snacks and candy, gift certificates, apparel, books and movies, and autographed merchandise. From Monopoly to fishing poles and Kit Kat Bars to Moosehead Beer, the baskets spiritedly showcase the items Sharks athletes reach for when not on the ice.
The funds collected from the two-night auction are directed to charities specified by the Lady Sharks. This year, proceeds were split between the Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco (RMH-SF) and Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services. Money to the latter will be donated in memory of Katie Moore, wife of former Shark Dominic Moore, who lost a courageous battle with liver cancer last year.
“These funds will contribute to our art therapy program designed to support children with cancer and their siblings,” said Jacob’s Heart Executive Director, Susan Osorio. “Secondly, in memory of Katie Moore, a portion of these funds will be dedicated to providing bereavement services to Jacob’s Heart families who have lost their child to cancer during this past year.”
The donation to the RMH-SF fulfilled the wish of Patrick and Christina Marleau, who hold a longstanding relationship with the organization. The annual “Patrick Marleau Golf Classic” has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars to help fund and publicize the RMH-SF’s mission to “provide a safe haven for critically-ill children and their families.”
“When we went to visit the house, it was amazing to see what they provide for the families of the children who are in the hospital,” shared Christina Marleau, who was introduced to the RMH-SF by family friends.
She continued, “I don't think anyone could ever be prepared for the emotional or financial toll that a diagnosis brings to them. Instead of staying at a hotel, these families are offered a place to call home. It is an absolutely amazing organization that helps those who desperately need it.”
The Sharks Foundation would like to thank the Lady Sharks and Sharks fans for the support and success of this annual fundraiser.
