The Report from Worcester is a weekly update on the San Jose Sharks AHL affiliate, the Worcester Sharks.

Sharks Snap Shot:

The Worcester Sharks (27-23-1-6, 61pts) chomped three out of a possible four points in two home games last week. The Sharks began the weekend with a wild 4-3 shootout loss to the Providence Bruins on Saturday in front of 7,804 fans at the DCU Center to kick off a four game home stand. Worcester wrapped up the weekend by closing out a 12 game season series with the Portland Pirates on Sunday with an impressive 5-3 win on Sunday afternoon.

Head coach Roy Sommer passed Fred “Bun” Cook for the 2nd most games coached in AHL history (1,172) on in the 4-3 shootout loss to the Bruins on Saturday. Sommer trails Frank Mathers by 83 games for the most games coached in AHL history (1,256).

Worcester is now three points behind the 8th place CT Whale with four games in hand for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Sharks host two games this week at the DCU Center with a 7pm start vs. the Penguins on Wednesday and a 7:30pm match vs. the Penguins on Friday to wrap up a four game home stand.

The Worcester Sharks player of the week nominee was rookie forward Freddie Hamilton. Freddie recorded three points (1-2-3), was +4, and fired seven shots in two games last week. Hamilton now has 17 points (8-9-17) and is the only Worcester Sharks player to dress in all 57 games this season.

Few things to know:
  • The Sharks are currently in 4th place (27-23-1-6, 61pts) in the Atlantic Division and 11th place overall in the Eastern Conference. – the Sharks trail the CT by three points (Sharks have four games in hand) for the final playoff spot in the East.

  • The San Jose Sharks currently have 11 players on their roster that have spent time in Worcester (Couture, Desjardins, Pavelski, Sheppard, Wingels, Braun, Demers, Greiss, Kennedy, Irwin, and Stalock).
  • The San Jose Sharks are currently in 3rd place in the Pacific Division with 28 points and an 11-7-6 record.
  • Goaltender Alex Stalock was recalled by the SJ Sharks on March 8 and picked up his first NHL loss with a 4-3 OT loss to the St. Louis Blues. Al made six saves on seven shots in 15:34 of action in relief of Antti Niemi. It was his first NHL action in 767 days. Stalock is currently tied with Thomas Greiss for the most wins in Worcester Sharks franchise history (74).
  • Forward Tim Kennedy was recalled by the SJ Sharks on Feb 12. Kennedy has two goals in 12 games with San Jose. Tim continues to lead the Worcester Sharks with 37 points (13-24-37) in 37 games… Kennedy has a two game point streak (0-5-5) in Worcester.
  • Matt Irwin was recalled again by the San Jose Sharks on Feb 25. Irwin has played 15 games with the SJ Sharks this season (2-2-4) and has averaged 19:24 of ice time. Matt had a goal and assist in the SJ Sharks 4-3 loss to the Blues on Saturday.
  • Yanni Gourde was recalled from the San Francisco Bulls (ECHL) on March 11. Yanni had a point in all eight games for the Bulls (4-6-10) and one fighting major.
  • Goaltender Thomas Heemskerk was recalled from the SF Bulls on March 9. Heemskerk had a 13-17-1 record with the Bulls along with a 3.16GAA and a .904 save %.
  • Forward Tommy Grant was reassigned to San Francisco on March 11. Grant had three points (1-2-3) in 14 games for Worcester.
  • All-Star Bracken Kearns leads Worcester with nine power play goals, 15 goals overall, and is 3rd with seven fighting majors. He was returned to Worcester on March 7 after appearing in one scoreless game with the SJ Sharks.
  • The Sharks are tied for 3rd in the AHL with 17 one-goal wins. Worcester is 17-6-1-5 in one goal games this season. – Worcester is 13-3-0-2 in one goal games on the road this season – best in AHL.
  • The Sharks are 2nd in the AHL with 6 wins when trailing after 40 minutes of play this season (6-16-0-4). In addition the Sharks are 9-4-0-1 when tied after 40 minutes of play.
  • Coach Roy Sommer currently ranks 4th in the AHL with 536 wins in his career (15th season) and 2nd in games coached in the AHL with 1173.
  • The Sharks host two action packed games at the DCU Center this week.

  1. Captain John McCarthy fired a season high eight shots and tied the game late in the 3rd period for his 9th goal in the Sharks 4-3SOL to the Bruins on Saturday!
  2. Freddie Hamilton was +3 and added two assists in the Sharks 5-3 win over the Pirates on Sunday!
  3. Harri Sateri made 39 saves and was 5-for-7 in shootout in 4-3 shootout loss to the Bruins on Saturday!

3.9.13 – Providence 4 – Worcester 3 – SOL – DCU Center
The Worcester Sharks (26-23-1-6, 59pts) fell to the Atlantic Division leading Providence Bruins (35-18-0-5, 73pts) in a 4-3 shootout loss on Saturday evening in front of 7,804 fans at the DCU Center. Harri Sateri was superb with 39 saves on 42 shots, but his counterpart, Niklas Svedberg made 45 saves on 48 shots including 16 saves on 17 shots in the third period. Worcester's Captain John McCarthy scored with just one minute left in the third period to tie the game and force overtime but Worcester was unable to find one more tally in the overtime period. Even strength goals by Sebastian Stalberg and Freddie Hamilton filled out the Worcester scoring.

3.10.13 – Portland 3 – Worcester 5 – W – DCU Center
The Worcester Sharks (27-23-1-6, 61 points) extended their home point streak to four games (3-0-1) with a 5-3 victory over the Portland Pirates (33-21-3-2, 71 points) in front of 3,604 fans at the DCU Center on Sunday afternoon. James Livingston, Bracken Kearns and Daniil Tarasov gave the Sharks an early 3-0 lead before the Pirates tied the score at 3-3 early in the third period. Marek Viedensky deflected home an Adam Comrie blast for the game winner early in the 3rd period and Bracken Kearns added an empty netter for his team leading 15th goal of the season. Harri Sateri made 29 saves for his 12th win of the season as the Sharks closed out their 12 game season series with the Pirates with three straight wins.
