Report from Worcester - 3\/6\/2013

The Report from Worcester is a weekly update on the San Jose Sharks AHL affiliate, the Worcester Sharks.

Sharks Snap Shot:

The Worcester Sharks (26-23-1-5, 58pts) chomped two out of a possible six points in three road games last week. The Sharks began the weekend with a tough 3-1 loss in Providence on Friday. But the Sharks bounced back with an impressive 2-1 shootout victory over the Pirates in Portland on Saturday followed by a 2-0 loss to the Falcons in Springfield on Sunday afternoon to finish the 3-in-3 road weekend 1-2-0-0. Head coach Roy Sommer tied Fred “Bun” Cook for the 2nd most games coached in AHL history (1,171) on Sunday in Springfield. Sommer trails Frank Mathers by 85 games for the most games coached in AHL history (1,256). Worcester is now three points behind the 8th place CT Whale with two games in hand for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Sharks host two games this weekend at the DCU Center with a 7pm start vs. the Bruins on Saturday and a 3pm game vs. the Pirates on Sunday.

The Worcester Sharks player of the week nominee was goaltender Harri Sateri. Harri made 54 saves on 57 shots (.947 save %) in two games last weekend which included a 37 save effort on Saturday in a 2-1 shootout win at Portland.

Few things to know:
  • The Sharks are currently in 3rd place (26-23-1-5, 58pts) in the Atlantic Division and 10th place overall in the Eastern Conference. – the Sharks trail the CT by three points (Sharks have two games in hand) for the final playoff spot in the East.

  • The San Jose Sharks currently have 11 players on their roster that have spent time in Worcester (Couture, Desjardins, Pavelski, Sheppard, Wingels, Braun, Demers, Greiss, Kennedy, Irwin, and Kearns).
  • The San Jose Sharks are currently in 2nd place in the Pacific Division with 24 points and a 10-6-4 record.
  • Goaltender Alex Stalock is currently tied with Thomas Greiss for the most wins in franchise history (74).
  • SJ Sharks recalled forward Tim Kennedy on Feb 12. Kennedy currently has two goals in eight games with San Jose. Tim continues to lead the Worcester Sharks with 37 points (13-24-37) in 37 games … Kennedy has a two game point streak (0-5-5) in Worcester.
  • Matt Irwin was recalled again by the San Jose Sharks on Feb 25. Irwin has played 11 games with the SJ Sharks this season (1-1-2) and has averaged 19:19 of ice time.
  • Yanni Gourde was loaned to the San Francisco Bulls on Feb 25. Yanni has three points (1-2-3) and one fighting major in four games.
  • Defenseman Sena Acolatse returned to the lineup on Friday after missing 22 games with a broken jaw.
  • All-Star Bracken Kearns leads Worcester with eight power play goals and is second with seven fighting majors. Kearns was recalled by the San Jose Sharks on March 3.
  • The Sharks are tied for 1st in the AHL with 17 one-goal wins. Worcester is 17-6-1-5 in one goal games this season. – Worcester is 13-3-0-2 in one goal games on the road this season – best in AHL.
  • The Sharks lead the AHL with 6 wins when trailing after 40 minutes of play this season (6-16-0-4). In addition the Sharks are 9-4-0-1 when tied after 40 minutes of play.
  • Coach Roy Sommer currently ranks 4th in the AHL with 534 wins in his career (15th season) and 2nd in games coached in the AHL with 1171.

3.1.13 – Providence 3 – Worcester 1 – L – Dunkin Donuts Center
The Worcester Sharks (25-22-1-5, 56pts) kicked off their 3rd consecutive 3-in-3 weekend with a 3-1 loss to the Atlantic Division leading Providence Bruins (32-18-0-4, 68pts) on Friday evening in front of 9,182 fans at the Dunkin Donuts Center. Alex Stalock was superb with 20 saves but was denied win #75. Marek Viedensky scored in his second consecutive game with an unassisted shorthanded goal late in the second period but it wasn’t enough offense for the Sharks.

3.2.13 – Portland 1 – Worcester 2 – SOW – Cumberland County Civic Center
The Worcester Sharks (26-22-1-5, 58pts) defeated the division rival Portland Pirates (32-19-1-2, 67pts) by a score of 2-1 in the shootout on Saturday evening in front of 6,164 fans at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Harri Sateri was super with 37 saves for his 9th road win of the season and Marek Viedensky scored the only goal in the shootout for the Sharks. Sebastian Stalberg scored a first period power play goal as Worcester improved to 15-3-0-1 when they score a power play on the road.

3.3.13 – Springfield 2 – Worcester 0 – L – Mass Mutual Center
The Worcester Sharks (26-23-1-5, 58pts) were defeated by their Eastern Conference rival the Springfield Falcons (34-19-1-2, 71pts) by a score of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in front of 3,791 fans at the Mass Mutual Center. The Sharks wrapped up the 3-in-3 road weekend with a 1-2-0-0 record. Harri Sateri made 17 saves in the loss. Head Coach Roy Sommer tied Fred “Bun” Cook for the 2nd most games coached in AHL history with 1171 as Curtis McElhinney made 30 saves for his AHL leading 8th shutout of the season for the Falcons.
