Hockey in the Bay Area, as well as throughout California, has seen immense growth within the past decade. When the HP High School Hockey League made its debut in 2000 at Sharks Ice, four teams comprised of players with no specific school affiliation made up the entire league. In 2010, the league grew to 25 teams with players traveling from as far north as Santa Rosa, Salinas to the south, Stockton to the east and Santa Cruz to the west.

In 2012, the Northern California High School Hockey League was formed from high schools in the Bay Area who were able to form teams comprised of their own students. Archbishop Mitty, Bellarmine, Valley Christian, and Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa) are the participating charter members.

In March of 2012, Bellarmine, Valley Christian, JSerra, and Santa Margarita competed in the inaugural California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) High School State Championship held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA. The event was a groundbreaking moment for California hockey as it was the first time California held a state championship between high school teams. Santa Margarita defeated Bellarmine 4-1 to win the state championship, eventually advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2012 USA Hockey High School National Championship in Utah.

"I am very proud of how far the game of hockey has come at the high school ranks," Sharks Ice Youth Hockey Manager Matt Adams said. "We have been very fortunate to have some amazing players, parents, coaches and faculty members from various schools that have dedicated countless hours to promote the sport. They have ensured that high school hockey will continue to grow for many years to come."

Sharks Ice at San Jose is located at 1500 S. 10th Street (corner of 10th and Alma) in San Jose.
