SSE Employees Enjoy a Day of Community Service

Monday, 10.01.2012 / 3:00 PM / Sharks Foundation

On the morning of October 1, San Jose Sharks employees rallied around two well-known local organizations, Sacred Heart Community Service and Second Harvest Food Bank, as part of a company-wide day of service.

30 employees were dispatched to each location to accept donations, sort food and clothes and interact with staff members and clients. Both organizations rely heavily on volunteers to cost effectively fulfill the needs of the community members who utilize their services on a daily basis. Every month, Sacred Heart volunteers help serve an average of 20,000 homeless or in-need individuals, while Second Harvest volunteers help feed over 236,000 people.

“Local hunger is a bigger issue than many people may know,” shared Event Presentation Coordinator Jack Craig. “It’s important to volunteer time with these organizations to combat the issue.” Ultimately, Sharks staff sorted 510 boxes of bell peppers, totaling 8,160 lbs of food.

With 60 front office staff participating in total, nearly every department at Sharks Sports & Entertainment was well-represented, and employees enjoyed the chance to bond while contributing to two very special causes. The staff demonstrated their team pride by donning their favorite Sharks t-shirts, polos, sweaters and jerseys. Appearances by S.J. Sharkie at both volunteer sites provided a little flair, if not a bit of chaos, to the morning’s activities.

Following the clothing and food sort, employees assisting at Sacred Heart sat down with Community Involvement Coordinator Matt King for a brief reflection session. Sharks broadcaster Randy Hahn remarked that the morning helped him realize in-need individuals do not fit a single mold, but are comprised of all backgrounds and ethnicities. Others observed that the positive attitude and gratitude exhibited by Sacred Heart clients, despite the difficulties they face, made them count their own blessings.

Upon the employees’ return to HP Pavilion at San Jose that afternoon, the front office was buzzing with positive energy and discussions of organizing future outreach opportunities.

“What a great day to give back to the community with my co-workers,” stated Sharks Foundation Board Member Mary Grace Miller. “It feels good to know that our hard work will benefit so many people. I’m proud to donate my time and look forward to doing it again soon.”

The Sharks Foundation has a long-standing relationship with Sacred Heart and Second Harvest, supporting the organizations through annual in-game food, clothes and fund drives. Sacred Heart is also a current beneficiary of the Sharks Foundation’s 2011-12 grant process. On this day, staff enjoyed the opportunity to donate their time and interact directly with the individuals who both provide and utilize the integral services offered by these charities.
