Sharks Foundation Golf Classic Raises Over $75,000

Monday was a day away from the rink for the Sharks players as they took part in the annual Sharks Foundation Golf Classic, presented by Silver Creek Sportsplex. The terrific affair brings players, corporate partners and fans together each year with the end result being money raised for the Sharks Foundation.

The golf classic is the Sharks Foundation's largest fundraiser of the season and contributes tens of thousands to designated charities each year.

"It's really fun and I have a great group," said defenseman Mike Moore. "Having fun is what this is all about. This is just a great way to raise money."

"A lot of money is raised and that's good," said netminder Thomas Greiss.

Some players by the level of their golf talents can carry their fivesomes by themselves. Players in that group would include forwards Devin Setoguchi and Joe Pavelski.

Then there are others who simply don't play a lot of golf.

"I hit a couple of good shots early, but the team has had to carry me since," said Moore.

For Greiss, he only plays at the annual team fundraisers, whether it's in San Jose or Worcester.

"I like it, but I wish I could throw the ball instead of hitting it," said Greiss, who counted his total golf days during his lifetime. "It's less than 10. You can count them on one hand. Only here or the tournament in Worcester. I'm trying. I'm hitting the ball now. I take a lot of 'practice swings."

After taking part in numerous Sharks versions, Ryane Clowe has started his own tournament back in Newfoundland.

"I'm more appreciative of this one now that I have my own" said Clowe. "It's a great event."

On top of raising funds during the day, the golf classic also provides a bit of a break for players who have gone virtually non stop for two weeks. It has even been longer for players who started in the rookie camp three weeks ago and are still here.

"It's good to get away from the rink for a day," said Jed Ortmeyer. "It relaxes the mind and it's for a good cause."
