Sharks Sign Vlasic to Five-Year Contract Extension

SAN JOSE, California -- San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has re-signed defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic to a five-year contract extension. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Vlasic, 25, finished third on the team, first among defensemen, with a +11 rating. He has been a double-digit plus player in five out of his six season in the League. He also led the team and was T-12th in the League with 171 blocked shots, including a franchise-record eight blocks on Dec. 23 vs. Los Angeles. He was named the NHL Second Star of the Week for Nov. 14-20 when his tallied seven points (1-6=7) and a +7 in three games, including a career-high four-point, +5 game on Nov. 17 vs. Detroit.

In six seasons with San Jose, he has appeared in 471 regular season games where he has posted 133 points (22-111=133). In franchise history, he ranks 11th in games played and his +62 career plus/minus rating is second. Named to the 2006-07 NHL All-Rookie Team, Vlasic’s 471 career regular season games rank second among all players selected in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

“Marc-Edouard has grown into an important part of our organization over the last six seasons,” said Wilson. “He can play in all situations and has blossomed into a very trusted player on both sides of the puck. We are very happy to have him on our team for the next six seasons.”

In addition to his regular season experience, his 68 playoff games are T-5th most in franchise history. He has posted nine points (0-9=9) in those games. He has twice represented his home country of Canada at the World Championships (2012, 2009).

The six-foot-one, 200-pound native of Montreal, Quebec was originally selected by San Jose in the second round (35th overall) of the 2005 NHL Draft.
