The Sharks Beard-A-Thon is Back for the Playoffs

The San Jose Sharks have officially secured their spot in the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs and fans everywhere have the opportunity to join in on the tradition of the playoff beard. The Sharks Foundation and many other charities across the NHL are grateful for this tradition in that the Beard-a-thon® will benefit these organizations with every donation.

Those fans that choose to “grow” are joining the ranks of all the Sharks players who will go without shaving while they remain in the playoffs. While not shaving doesn’t necessarily mean growing a full beard for some, the effort is what really counts. Sharks players and the fans that participate can invite their friends and family to pledge a donation amount to support their playoff beard. Fans who are unwilling, or unable, to grow playoffs beards, can also pledge their friends or favorite Sharks player. For more information or to enroll in the Sharks Beard-a-thon, please log onto www.beardathon.com/sharks. All donations to the Sharks Beard-a-thon are tax deductible.

Last season, over 600 fans participated in this cause and raised over $20,000 for the Sharks Foundation through three rounds of the playoffs. The top participant from last season was S.J. Sharkie who raised $2,500 during the 2011 playoff run. The top player was Logan Couture with over $1,000 in donations.

About the Playoff Beard
A playoff beard is the superstitious practice of a National Hockey League player not shaving his beard during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The player stops shaving when his team enters the playoffs and does not shave until his team is eliminated or wins the Stanley Cup. It is believed that the tradition was started in the 1980s by the four-time Stanley Cup Champion New York Islanders. In recent years, other sports and other players have claimed the playoff beard tradition, but it is ultimately a hockey tradition, and always will be.

About the Sharks Foundation
The Sharks Foundation positively impacts the community in two ways: (1) implements effective programs that enhance the lives of youth and families and (2) raises funds and redistributes the money back into the community.

This year alone, our literacy program has helped over 25,000 students learn about the importance of reading.

During the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, the Sharks Foundation will be able to provide close to $1 million in support to local organizations. Since its inception in 1994, the Sharks Foundation has donated more than $5.7 million to more than 100 non-profit groups in Santa Clara County. In all, the Sharks Foundation supports tens of thousands of people each year.
