Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the San Jose Sharks signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Jim Vandermeer to a one-year contract. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Vandermeer, 31, posted 14 points (two goals and 12 assists) and 74 penalty minutes in 62 games with Edmonton in 2010-11. He finished fourth on the team in hits (122) and blocked shots (78).
In eight NHL seasons, Vandermeer has registered 101 points (24 goals and 77 assists) in 436 regular season games with Edmonton, Phoenix, Calgary, Philadelphia and Chicago. In 21 playoff games, he has posted two assists and 17 penalty minutes.
“Jim will bring physicality and toughness to our blueline while bolstering our depth,” said Wilson. “He has proven to be a great teammate in his career and will be counted on as a steadying presence.”
The 6-foot-1, 215-pound native of Caroline, Alberta was originally signed as a free agent by Philadelphia on Dec. 21, 2000.
