Setoguchi Is 3rd Sharks Playoff Hat Trick Man
San Jose can keep saying this series is different than last year’s, but once again there was another comparison. This time, on the anniversary of 2010’s Game 3 come-from-behind, overtime victory in Detroit that put San Jose up 3-0 in the series, San Jose captured a Game 3 come-from-behind overtime victory in Detroit to go up 3-0 in the series.

“We weren’t thinking about it that way,” hero Devin Setoguchi said. “We showed a lot of resiliency coming back and killing off that big penalty in overtime.”

The main difference this year was instead of Patrick Marleau securing the overtime tally, it was Setoguchi capping off his first playoff hat trick.

“I saw Jumbo curl off the wall and usually when he does that he looks to the middle for the quick shot and I got it,” Setoguchi said. “Eaves was in the slot so I tried to get it through his legs quickly. Snuck one right by him.”

Before he could score the game winner, Setoguchi had to sweat out two minutes in the penalty box as he was given a questionable call where he was actually the one who was taken down. Nonetheless, the emotions were flying during the alone time.

“You’re not really thinking, you’re just saying ‘don’t score, don’t score, don’t score, don’t score, over and over in your head,” Setoguchi said. “To get the goal after taking the penalty and sitting there for two minutes was a good feeling.”

San Jose had surrendered two power play tallies to Detroit, but they were clutch when the penalty kill was called upon in the extra session.

“Props to our penalty kill, they did a great job on that power play,” Setoguchi said. “They are so lethal, it’s a tough job to contain them.”

Setoguchi had his game-winning celebration in hand in case the hat trick was completed. The Taber, Alberta joined Patrick Marleau (three times) and Ulf Dahlen as the only Sharks playoff hat trick performers.

“If you really want to know, I looked over at Logan Couture (during the intermission) and said you’d better get it before I do because I’ve already got my celebration ready to go,” Setoguchi began. “He said ‘so do I.’ I said I’m going to go pull the Ronaldo double knee and he said ‘that was mine.’ I said I would try to beat him to it then. It’s kind of weird that it happened that way.”

And he did. Couture’s post game smile showed he wasn’t offended by his fellow Tweeter stealing his thunder.
