SAN JOSE – In an effort to support the Japanese Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief, the Sharks Foundation raised $25,065 through a two-night fundraiser.
On Wed., March 23 (vs. Calgary) and again on Thu., March 31 (vs. Dallas), the Sharks Foundation collected monetary donations at the doors as fans entered the arena and held a special used stick auction at the Sharks Foundation Booth. Over both nights, $11,500 was collected from Sharks fans as they entered HP Pavilion and another $13,500 was contributed through the used stick auction. The three highest selling sticks were those of forwards Patrick Marleau ($1,470), Logan Couture ($1,039), and Joe Thornton ($1,000).
All of the money raised will be given directly to the American Red Cross’ Japanese Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief Efforts. The Sharks Foundation also asked fans who were not in attendance to contribute by donating directly to the American Red Cross through a text-to-donate program.
“We’re thrilled with the way Sharks fans responded by generously giving to a quickly assembled initiative,” said Sharks Foundation Manager Jeff Cafuir. “It’s our hope that this money will swiftly benefit all those affected by the tragedy, which undoubtedly includes many from our Bay Area Community.”
ABOUT THE SHARKS FOUNDATION
The Sharks Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the lives of youth and families in our community with an emphasis in the areas of Education, Health and Safety, and Character Development. The Sharks Foundation supplies emergency aid when appropriate, executes unique and relevant programming, supports the advancement of youth hockey and provides financial support and resources to organizations that enrich the lives of those in need.
The Sharks Foundation positively impacts the community in two ways (1) implements effective programming that changes the lives of youth and families and (2) raises funds and redistributes the money back into the community.
This year alone, our literacy program has helped more than 22,000 students learn about the importance of reading. Also this year, the Sharks Foundation granted more than $272,000 to 11 non-profit organizations in Santa Clara County, and since its inception, has donated more than $5.2 million.
The San Jose Sharks are deeply involved with their neighborhood. As role models, we are committed to giving back to the community that so strongly supports us.
