The San Jose Sharks are close to finalizing a deal with forward Jamal Mayers to bring his physical game to San Jose.
After spending most of his NHL career with the Blues, Mayers moved to Toronto for a season and a half and then played 27 games for Calgary last year.
In 2009-10 with Calgary and Toronto, Mayers accumulated 14 points (3 goals, 11 assists) to go along with 131 penalty minutes in 71 games.
“Jamal is a fast, physical, team-first player who brings the ingredients we were looking for to this role,” said Sharks Executive Vice President Doug Wilson. “He is an extremely fit athlete who can kill penalties and we think he will mesh well with our group of forwards.”
In 737 NHL games with St, Louis, Toronto and Calgary, Mayers has picked up 188 points (81 games, 107 assists) and 969 penalty minutes. He has also played in 48 Stanley Cup Playoff games, all with St. Louis, and posted 13 points (five goals, eight assists) and 20 penalty minutes.
Mayers has represented his native Canada three times at the World Championships (2000, 2007 [gold medal] and 2008 [silver medal]).
The six-foot-one, 215-pound forward from Toronto, Ontario was originally drafted by St. Louis in the fourth round (89th overall) in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft.
