When the Sharks conclude their preseason schedule in North America and before they faceoff with Columbus for two regular season games in Sweden, San Jose will make a visit to Germany.
The NHL has set up a preseason contest against a European club for every NHL team that opens their regular season across the Atlantic. For San Jose, that game will take place in Mannheim, Germany against the Adler Mannheim Eagles at SAP Arena on Saturday October 2 at 11:30 a.m. PST. San Jose will then open the season against Columbus in Stockholm, Sweden on October 8 and 9 (Noon PST).
Other preseason games involving NHL clubs will take place in Russia, Finland, Czech Republic and Latvia.
“We’re excited to be a part of the Premier program and to build the NHL brand around Europe,” said Sharks President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Jamison. “Visiting Mannheim lets us put the NHL footprint in yet another region.”
Fans already heading over to Sweden to see the regular season opener can watch the German game in person by purchasing tickets by clicking here.
San Jose will leave for Germany following their final North American preseason game against Vancouver on September 29. With two games that will count in the standings, the importance of getting a live game scenario under their belts and as much practice time as possible on the larger rinks is vital to the Sharks early success.
An interesting note with the NHL’s Premiere Games is the last two Stanley Cup Champions opened their seasons in Europe. Hopefully it will be a hat trick that can involve the Sharks.
