E-Waste Recycling at The Tank

The San Jose Sharks, in partnership with HP, hosted an electronic recycling event in early March to collect unwanted computer electronics and offer community members the chance to witness the team’s morning skate. Held in the main parking lot of HP Pavilion, 229 cars deposited old electronics at the arena in a span of eight hours. In total, 5 metric tons computer hardware was collected!

“This event provided an excellent opportunity to promote responsible recycling habits to our local community,” Sharks Fan Development Manager Jeff Cafuir commented. “It’s possible that these items would have ended up in a landfill. Now they will be reused and recycled. This was a simple, effective way to protect our environment and yet another way for the Sharks to be more eco-friendly.”

“I had an old TV and VCR just sitting in my garage collecting dust,” Sharks fan Ernesto Reyes of Santa Clara said. “When I heard that you could watch the Sharks morning skate if you dropped off an item, I decided to head down. This is a lot better than just tossing it in the trash.”

Items included televisions, computers, MP3 players, DVD players and cell phones. Participants were also encouraged to appraise the value of their old equipment through HP’s Consumer Buyback program and recycle their items by mail.

As a reward for their donation, contributors were granted a private viewing of the team’s practice and were also entered into a raffle to win HP products and autographed Sharks memorabilia.

“I think we would have received a large turnout without offering incentives,” Cafuir said. “But it’s great that we can reward our fans for their time and effort.”
