Nabokov Tabbed By Russia
The Ice Hockey Federation of Russia announced today that San Jose Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabokov has been named to Russia’s men’s ice hockey team for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The Olympics will be held from Feb. 12-28 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The six-foot, 200-pound native of Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan is 19-5-7 on the 2009-10 season, along with a 2.33 GAA and a .924 save percentage in 32 games for San Jose this year.

Other Sharks Olympic hopefuls could hear this week as Sweden will announce their team on Dec. 27, Canada on Dec. 30 and the United States on Jan. 1.

Nabokov currently sits T-33rd on the NHL’s all-time wins list with 268 and 50th on the all-time games played list with 524. Nabokov played in his 500th career NHL game on Oct. 17 vs. the New York Islanders

This will be Nabokov’s second Olympic appearance. In 2006 at the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, Nabokov helped lead Russia to a fourth-place finish, recording three shutouts and a 1.34 GAA in seven games. He finished second in the tournament among all goaltenders with a .940 save percentage.

He also represented Russia at the 2008 World Championships when they captured the gold medal. In five games, Nabokov posted two shutouts and a 1.78 GAA. He was voted “Best Goalkeeper” of the tournament and Team Russia’s best player.

Nabokov was selected to play in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey but withdrew due to injury.

Nabokov was originally drafted by San Jose in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft (9th round, 219th overall).
