First Goal Memorable

For Sharks rookie Benn Ferriero, the start of the season couldn't have gone much better. To begin with, he was in uniform against Colorado on opening night, not what many would have projected when the Sharks rookie camp opened. While the outcome wasn't ideal in the mile high city, Ferriero’s father was travelling and as a result was able to make his son's NHL debut.

"He was in Arizona and just flew up before the game," said Ferriero. "It was lucky timing."

The elder Ferriero had to return home after the Colorado contest, but Benn and the team had better results in game two as they hammered rival Anaheim Saturday night. For Ferriero, he put his personal stamp on the evening by scoring his first NHL goal and jump staring the club offensively on their way to their first win.

"It was a double plus because I helped the team get its first victory and it was my first NHL goal," said Ferriero. "It's a great feeling to not only get the team going, but to get the goal and the win.”

The only difficult part for Ferriero is dealing with a new cell phone that doesn't have voicemail yet, so he missed out on a couple of congratulatory calls.

"It doesn't have voicemail yet, but I've got enough texts," said Ferriero.

That is not to say Ferriero hasn't been in contact with a plethora of people back home in Massachusetts, including his parents. He's also had the texts going with his younger brothers who are in high school.

"I've had a couple of texts with them," said Ferriero.

Ferriero is living the dream few get to even think about, but the critical part is that he is not just on the roster, but playing and contributing.

"It's exciting," said Ferriero. "When I came into camp, I didn't know what to expect.”

For fans getting acquainted with the rookie, the last name is pronounced FERRY-OH and the first name does in fact have two Ns.

"It's Italian," said Ferriero of his last name. "You just don't pronounce the last R."

As for the first name, there is an explanation for the additional N as well.

"My real name is Benn, not Benjamin, so they put the extra letter there," said Ferriero.

Ferriero doesn't plan to change anything from a hockey standpoint as he looks to stay in San Jose.

"I'm just keeping the same things going and trying to be better every day," said Ferriero.

The Boston College product has enough perspective to get a good chuckle out of the fact that he leads another Sharks newcomer (Dany Heatley) in goals.

"I don’t know how much longer that will last," quipped Ferriero.

ALL TOGETHER
Fellow rookies Jason Demers and Frazer McLaren assisted on Ferriero's goal, also earning their first NHL points.

"It's pretty cool that three rookies could get their first points all on the same goal,” said Ferriero.

REST
Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan gave his team the day off before they prepared for their contest in Los Angeles this week.
