The Sharks Foundation is pleased to announce Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence as one of twelve Sharks Foundation beneficiaries for this season. The Sharks Foundation presented a check in the amount of $10,000 to the local nonprofit, whose goal is to end domestic violence by providing prevention and intervention services to women, men, children and teens in Santa Clara County. The Sharks Foundation grant will specifically support their Children’s Program, which seeks to increase the self esteem and sense of independence for children who have experienced domestic violence.
“Our main goal in working with children and youth of all ages is that we provide a warm and welcoming environment where all children feel safe and happy,” explains Becky Black, Next Door’s Development and Training Specialist, “We connect children with positive role models and through special activities related to art, music, workshops and field trips, children develop feelings of belonging and acceptance.”
By providing children with emotional and behavioral counseling in addition to the special activities, Next Door hopes to offer healthy alternatives to the risky behavior associated with this population of youth, such as substance abuse, violence, depression, and attempted suicide.
“Those affected by domestic violence, especially children, face so many hurtles in their recovery. It’s important to provide them with the tools to build resiliency and independence. The Sharks Foundation is honored to help in anyway that we can,” said Laura Johnston, Sharks Foundation Manager.
The program operates year round, three times each week for two-hour sessions and just last year alone it served 297 youth ages 5-17.
For those Sharks fans who may wish to get involved with Next Door, there are several ways to assist:
- Become a long-term volunteer by working on the 24-Hour Hotline or as a member of the community outreach programs.
- Become a short-term volunteer by organizing a fundraiser or a Kids Klub activity.
- Businesses are encouraged to sponsor one of the many special events held throughout the year.
- Support the program financially. Donations are welcomed at any level from individuals, organizations, companies or foundations.
