"Reading Is Cool" Launches for the 2005-06 School Year
The San Jose Sharks, The San Jose Mercury News and FSN Bay Area are pleased to launch the Reading Is Cool program for the 2005-06 school year!
Registration for Reading Is Cool will open at www.sjsharkie.com on Monday, October 10, 2005 at 3 p.m. The first 300 classrooms to register on-line will be eligible for a special interactive and team-building fieldtrip to HP Pavilion at San Jose.
Reading Is Cool is a free literacy program for public K-6th Grade classrooms in Santa Clara County and Southern Alameda County (Newark, Fremont, and Union City). It helps teach children the importance of reading via classroom visits from S.J. Sharkie, celebrity book readings, individual reader awards, and other exciting opportunities. Once a month, from November through April, each class' highest reader will be recognized with a Reading Is Cool gift. At the end of year, the highest overall reader from each class will be entered into a drawing for the chance to attend a Sharks game celebrating their success! The most improved reader from each class will also be recognized at the end of the year.
During the 2003-2004 school year, nearly 20,000 students in 812 classrooms participated in Reading Is Cool. At the end of the year, 88% of the participating teachers said the program motivated their students to read more books and 78% said it had a positive impact on the reading level of their students.
