Everyone in hockey knows Sharks center Jeremy Roenick is one of the more focused athletes on the ice. And as he aims towards a post-hockey life, he has a focus on a potential second career: acting.
Roenick already had done some on-camera work, listing previous appearances with “Hack” and “Ghost Whisperer,” and this week he will begin shooting a scene in “Leverage”, a new TNT production.
So how does a full-time NHLer plan on being a future full-time actor?
“I’m good friends with producer-director Paul Bernard and he wants to turn me into an actor when I’m done with hockey,” Roenick said. “He and his brother Tom are big producers in Los Angeles.”
From the work he has already done, Roenick knows acting isn’t an easy career choice.
“I like the finished product,” Roenick said. “There’s a lot of waiting and reshooting on the set. When it’s all said and done, it’s pretty cool.”
“Leverage,” which debuts in December, stars Academy Award-winner Timothy Hutton as he leads a highly-skilled team of thieves, hackers and grifters who act as modern-day Robin Hoods.
Roenick will be cemented early in the show’s debut.
“I’m pretty proud that’s the first scene of the series opener,” Roenick said. “I play a security guard who gets duped by a woman. I have five, six or seven lines.”
Previous roles have Roenick more excited than nervous about the shoot.
“I’m not nervous at all,” Roenick said. “The tricky part is finding the right roles and to look natural. You’ve got to get the mannerisms and facial expressions down. If you’re too stiff, you’re not believable. The best actors are the most believable. They completely change their personality. My role is smaller, but it’s still difficult.”
As for stage fright, that’s not a concern for someone who’s one of the NHL’s most gregarious personalities. A few years ago, Roenick appeared in commercials for the NHL.
“You can’t be afraid of the camera, but I’ve got that part covered,” Roenick said.
