SHARKS SIGN GOALTENDER TYSON SEXSMITH

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed goaltender Tyson Sexsmith to a three-year NHL entry level contract. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sexsmith has spent the last three seasons with the Vancouver Giants in the Western Hockey League. This past season, the 19-year-old ranked first in the WHL in goals-against-average (1.89), shutouts (nine) and second overall in wins with 43, while playing a league-high 3678 minutes. Sexsmith was 7-0-1-1 in his first nine starts and finished the season with a 43-11-6 record in 62 games. Sexsmith’s 2007-08 campaign garnered him WHL Second Team All-Star honors and a tryout with the Canadian Junior National Team for the 2008 World Junior Championships.

For the third straight season, Sexsmith and the Giants found themselves in the WHL playoffs in 2007-08. Sexsmith carried over his stellar regular season play into the postseason, where he recorded a 6-4-0 record with a 1.82 GAA in ten games. The effort was not enough however as the Giants fell to the eventual 2008 Memorial Cup Champions, the Spokane Chiefs.

In 2006-07, Sexsmith helped Vancouver capture their first ever Memorial Cup, while going 31-12-2-6 with a league low 1.79 GAA during the regular season. He also finished second in the league in shutouts with 10 before carrying the Giants in the postseason with a 14-3-4 record in the WHL playoffs, adding four more shutouts and just 40 goals against in 22 games.

The 6-foot, 204-pound native of Calgary, Alberta was selected by San Jose in the third round (91st overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
