SAN JOSE - This playoff season, San Jose Sharks fans participated in the long-standing hockey tradition of the playoff beard. Over 160 fans dedicated their playoff beard to a worthy cause. Through a personalized Beard-A-Thon page, these fans updated photos of their beard growth and helped raise a total of $9,807 through 202 unique donors. The top celebrity beard growers included beloved San Jose Sharks mascot S.J. Sharkie, who raised almost $3,000 and Sharks Forward, #83 Matt Nieto who raised $1,000. The top fan beard grower was David Dagget who raised $785.
Proceeds from this year's Beard-A-Thon will be donated on behalf of Mary Nieto, mother of Sharks Rookie forward, #83 Matt Nieto, who was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer this past October. Proceeds will be split between two cancer-related organizations; Breast Cancer Angels, where Mary received support services and the local chapter of the American Cancer Society located in Campbell.
Donations can be made through the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Finals on the Sharks Beard-A-Thon page at www.beardathon.com/sharks or donations can be made directly to these two organizations through their individual websites.
The Breast Cancer Angels, based in Matt's hometown of Long Beach, offers financial and emotional services to women and their families as they go through breast cancer treatment. They provide housing needs, medical coverage, group support and much more. Each year Breast Cancer Angels assist more than 600 clients and are growing every month. For more information about Breast Cancer Angels please visit: www.breastcancerangels.org.
The local chapter of the American Cancer Society (ACS) located in Campbell, will also receive a portion of this year's Beard-A-Thon proceeds. For more than 100 years, the Society has worked relentlessly to save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Whether it's passing smoke-free laws or improving access to quality health care, ACS fights on all fronts: helping people stay well, helping people get well, finding cures, and fighting back against cancer.
