Friday\'s Baker\'s Dozen - 2\/10\/2012

Time for my weekly Baker’s Dozen.
  1. The Sharks have seven games remaining against Eastern Conference teams, including four on the upcoming road trip. Here is how the Sharks have fared this year and the previous three seasons against the East and how their record ranks among Western Conference teams:

    2011-12: 8-3-0, 3rd (STL 11-0-2; COL 10-2-0)
    2010-11: 9-8-1, 12th
    2009-10: 12-4-2, T-2nd
    2008-09: 12-3-3, 1st

  2. It's that time of year to focus on the special teams trends instead of the percentage for the entire year. The Sharks PP success and PK struggles back in October are really irrelevant right now. Here are the totals for 5-game segments for the past 25 games:

    Last 5 PP: 5-13, 38.5%; PK: 8-10, 80.0%
    Last 10 PP: 7-24, 29.2%; PK: 17-20, 85.0%
    Last 15 PP: 11-42, 25.0%; PK: 24-28, 85.7%
    Last 20 PP: 12-60, 20.0%; PK: 40-47, 85.1%
    Last 25 PP: 16-75, 21.3%; PK: 51-61, 83.6%

  3. St. Louis started the season 6-7-0 before making a coaching change. Since then the Blues are 26-7-7 and one of the most impressive teams in the NHL. Sunday’s game against the Blues, who are 2-0-0 against the Sharks this year and 22-3-4 at home, should have a playoff feel to it.

  4. When I analyze a hockey player I consider the following five attributes: compete level, hockey sense, skating, puck skills and size.
    #OwenNolanHadAllOfThem

  5. Todd McLellan on Ryan Clowe's leadership and presence in the Sharks lineup: "He’s a pretty passionate guy, and it rubs off on a lot of others. Sometimes it gets the better of him and he gets a little frustrated, but he’s a big man with good vision, can protect pucks, he’s not afraid of anything and will go into hard areas to play. When Clowie is involved he’s making other people better, and I think that’s a sign of a real good player.”

  6. As we know the Sharks are about to head out for a nine-game, 16-day road trip. The total approximate miles for the trip are 9,514. However, assuming a schedule maker said, “You know what, a 16-day road trip is really long. We are going to try and make the travel make sense as the team goes from city to city."

The Sharks could save 1,719 miles or cut off 18% of total travel. Currently the Sharks travel from SJ to STL, WAS, TB, CAR, DET, CBJ, TOR, NSH, MIN and back to SJ.

  7. As we saw in the stats in #2 the Sharks PP has been heating up lately. BakesTakes13 will analyze a perfectly executed PP goal last Saturday in Phoenix.

  8. Quote of the week goes to Doug Wilson at Owen Nolan's Retirement Press Conference: "Owen is the type of player that opponents short-shifted."

In other words, players took shorter shifts when Owen was out there because they didn't want to play against him.

  9. I want to give a shout out to my old teammate of three years at St. Lawrence University, Mike Mudd, aka Mudder, who continues to do a tremendous job for the Sharks AHL affiliate in Worcester. In his first year as President of the Worcester Sharks, Mudder won the 2010-11 James C. Hendry Award as the AHL’s outstanding executive.

  10. In a recent broadcast I mentioned that Justin Braun is very 'efficient', which is intended to be a very good compliment for a defenseman. Since his junior days at Green Bay of the USHL, to his four years at UMass-Amherst, to his time in Worcester and San Jose, Braun has steadily improved and adapted to every new level. His keen on-ice awareness, patience and quick stick have helped him become an NHL regular and an important player for the San Jose Sharks.

  11. In what order of importance do you consider the five attributes below for an elite hockey player? Tweet me your answer @Bakes_Jamie13:

    I. Compete Level
    II. Hockey Sense
    III. Puck Skills
    IV. Size
    V. Skating

  12. As we head into the final stretch of the season, every detail of the game starts to matter more, as does the importance of special teams and goaltending.
    #NiemiTime

  13. I hope the NHL doesn’t lose the “Owen Nolan” type of player who was skilled, rugged and mean. People paid to watch him and he brought them out of the seats in many ways. Different personalities are mandatory in the best TV shows and I think they are just as needed in pro sports. Owen played with passion, emotion and was one of the best, if not the best, power forward during his time in the NHL. It was a pleasure and an honor to be his teammate in Quebec and San Jose.
