The Daily Chomp
Throwback Thursday - 8\/16\/2012

To celebrate Sharks history, each week we will highlight moments of the past. So check back to the Daily Chomp each week to celebrate with us for Throwback Thursday. In addition, we will be giving away special Sharks throwback items every Thursday.

This week the Daily Chomp takes a look at the Sharks 2006-07 season.

Did you know... Patrick Marleau broke the franchise record for most goals in franchise history (Owen Nolan, 206) on Jan. 11. Marleau also surpassed Nolan’s all-time marks for points (451), assists (245) and Mike Rathje’s standard for games played (671).

More from that year:
  • Acquired Craig Rivet and Bill Guerin.
  • Ron Wilson became the 13th coach in NHL history to coach in 1,000 games on March 18 at Colorado.
  • San Jose set a franchise record and led the League with 26 road wins. In addition, the Sharks set club marks for wins in a season (51) and points (107).
  • San Jose set an NHL record by playing in 49 consecutive games without going into overtime (surpassing Toronto’s 41 in 1996-97).
  • Defensemen Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Matt Carle were named to the NHL All-Rookie Team. The duo became the second pair of defensive teammates in NHL history to be named to the team in the same year (1991-92 — Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom and Vladimir Konstantinov).
  • Goaltenders Evgeni Nabokov (seven) and Vesa Toskala (four) combined to tie a San Jose record with 11 shutouts.
Also, be sure to check out the Sharks History Page and the Photo of the Day.

Pop Culture of that year:
  • Barry Bonds hit his 715th home run to pass Babe Ruth on the all time greats list
  • The one billionth song was purchased from Apple iTunes
  • Pluto was downgraded from a Planet to a dwarf planet by The International Astronomical Union
  • Zinedine Zidane infamously head-butted Marco Materazzi during the World Cup Soccer Final
  • Borat was released, making the sayings “High Five!!” and “Niiicee!” worldwide phenonmenons
