Did you know... Patrick Marleau broke the franchise record for most goals in franchise history (Owen Nolan, 206) on Jan. 11. Marleau also surpassed Nolan’s all-time marks for points (451), assists (245) and Mike Rathje’s standard for games played (671).
More from that year:- Acquired Craig Rivet and Bill Guerin.
- Ron Wilson became the 13th coach in NHL history to coach in 1,000 games on March 18 at Colorado.
- San Jose set a franchise record and led the League with 26 road wins. In addition, the Sharks set club marks for wins in a season (51) and points (107).
- San Jose set an NHL record by playing in 49 consecutive games without going into overtime (surpassing Toronto’s 41 in 1996-97).
- Defensemen Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Matt Carle were named to the NHL All-Rookie Team. The duo became the second pair of defensive teammates in NHL history to be named to the team in the same year (1991-92 — Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom and Vladimir Konstantinov).
- Goaltenders Evgeni Nabokov (seven) and Vesa Toskala (four) combined to tie a San Jose record with 11 shutouts.
Pop Culture of that year:
- Barry Bonds hit his 715th home run to pass Babe Ruth on the all time greats list
- The one billionth song was purchased from Apple iTunes
- Pluto was downgraded from a Planet to a dwarf planet by The International Astronomical Union
- Zinedine Zidane infamously head-butted Marco Materazzi during the World Cup Soccer Final
- Borat was released, making the sayings “High Five!!” and “Niiicee!” worldwide phenonmenons

Antti Niemi arguably plays one of the toughest positions in sports. However, the 28 year-old netminder has already accomplished more on his resume than some of the greatest to ever play his position. With his eyes firmly trained on adding to his 25 career postseason victories and another coveted Stanley Cup trophy, Niemi enters his third season with the Sharks. This past weekend, Niemi had the honor of his former hockey club retiring his jersey number.

Did you know... For the first time in franchise history, the Sharks advanced to the Western Conference Finals.
More from that year:- The Sharks captured their second Pacific Division title by recording a franchise best 104 points in the regular season.
- San Jose set a record by playing 11 consecutive home games without a loss from Nov. 15-Dec. 29 (7-0-4-0) and by recording eight consecutive home wins from Jan. 28-March 3.
- The Sharks set records in road points (47), shutouts (11) and most wins in a calendar month (10 — March).
- G Evgeni Nabokov set a franchise record with nine shutouts.
- LW Nils Ekman set a franchise record by compiling a plus-30 plus/minus rating for the season
- RW Jonathan Cheechoo set a franchise record with nine game-winning goals on the season.
- D Brad Stuart scored two goals in the last 17 seconds of regulation on April 4, 2003 vs. Los Angeles.

Last season, defenseman Dan Boyle became the highest goal-scoring defenseman in Sharks history when he passed Sandis Ozolinsh. Troubled by injury in the early goings of 2011-12, Boyle turned it on in the second half, finishing eighth among league defensemen in points (9-39=48). The Sharks assistant captain also set a career high in shots, finishing 2nd among league defenseman.

On Wednesday, July 11 the Sharks re-signed defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic to a five-year contract extension. At only 25, Vlasic already ranks 11th in games played in franchise history and his +62 career plus/minus rating ranks second. Vlasic finished third on the team, first among defensemen, with a +11 rating. He has been a double-digit plus player in five out of his six season in the League. He also led the team and was T-12th in the League with 171 blocked shots, including a franchise-record eight blocks on Dec. 23 vs. Los Angeles.
